Lassa Fever breaks out in Rivers, two confirmed dead

 

At least two persons have been confirmed dead in an outbreak of Lassa fever in Rivers State.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Theophilous Odageme, who confirmed the outbreak Tuesday in a statement, advised members of the public not to panic because the state government had taken a proactive measure to contain an outbreak.

Goverment shuts down Oshodi Market over insecurities, commences transformation exercise

Lagos State Government yesterday shut Owonifari market within the notorious loop of Oshodi, Oshodi/Isolo Local Government, aimed at addressing the security challenges in the axis.

It will be recalled that the State Government often arrest hoodlums in Oshodi to stern the activities of petty thieves who often deprive commuters of their property.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, who disclosed this, lamenting that the market, has constituted a menace and an eyesore within the locality.

Ayorinde noted that the relocated affected traders and shop owners to the newly built Isopakodowo market stalls at Bolade area in Oshodi.

Moments dying Lion hangs on last breath waiting patiently for help to come

 

Tourists driving around one of South Africa's top national parks were left horrified after they discovered a dying lion with a snare around its neck.

The injured young male was found staggering across the road by holidaymakers Meliska Viljoen and Meike Pettit, who immediately flashed the news to Kruger National Park's officials.

Within hours, the road was blocked to tourists and veterinarians set off to locate the lion.

Three die, several injured over yuletide firworks activity in Delta

 

Days after the celebration of the Yuletide, victims of fireworks across Delta State are still groaning in pains.

Two persons were said to have died of injuries caused by fireworks. 21 persons were injured and six admitted at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba. The hands of two of the victims were operated.

In Warri, a four-year old girl identified as Ejiro was reportedly killed by fireworks that exploded on her. The teenage girl was killed on the spot at her father’s residence on Ejegba Street.

IMF to assist Nigeria trace looted funds

 

The Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde while on a working visit to Nigeria, said on Tuesday in Abuja that the organisation was willing to assist the Federal Government of Nigeria in plugging revenue leakages, tracing stolen funds and restructuring the tax system.

She also said that Nigeria had all the potential to overcome the current economic challenge of falling commodity prices without resorting to the IMF for financial support.

Lagarde, who is in the country on a four-day working visit, reportedly said this during a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, according to a statement by the President’s Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina.

Metuh's arrest an attempt to silence the opposition, laments PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has been directed to poison its National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh.

Metuh was arrested by the anti-graft agency on Tuesday morning, for questioning over the diversion of $2.1 billion arms funds by the office of the former National Security Adviser. 

 

PDP described Metuh’s detention as an attempt by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government to silence the opposition and created a one-party dictatorship.

This was disclosed in a statement by its national secretary, Wale Oladipo on Tuesday evening.

A mild drama played out in Delta state at the weekend when some commercial sex workers reportedly attacked their customers over unpaid bills.

In the cause of the brawl at a certain popular cable point base of commercial sex workers in Asaba, the state capital, it was said that the commercial sex workers had resolved to increase their charges and had warned their customers who do not want to comply to steer clear of them but this was not to be as the victims claimed they were not put in the know of the new charges.

Sacked Abia governor heads to Supreme Court – See Notice of Appeal inside

 

The Peoples Democratic Party, Abia state chapter has rejected the judgement of the Court of Appeal sacking Governor Okezie Ikpeazu.

In a statement issued by Governor Ikpeazu’s Senior Special Adviser on Public Communications, Sam Hart, the party expressed it decision to challenge the judgement of the Appeal Court and has filed an appeal at the Supreme Court to this effect.

Local hunters appeal to join military fighting Boko Haram in Sambisa Forest

Hunters in Borno State on Sunday called on the military to allow them to join in the war against insurgents in Sambisa Forest, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

Malam Mai-Gana Mai-Durma, the Borno Emir of the Hunters, made the appeal in Maiduguri while addressing newsmen.

Mai-Durma said that the call became imperative because the hunters were familiar with the terrain at the dreaded forest, the hideout and operational base of the terrorists.

Navy nabs Crude Oil Thieves’ Hideouts In Delta, Arrests 16

Personnel of the Nigerian Navy yesterday in Oteghale Community, Warri-south local government area of Delta State, uncovered crude oil thieves hideouts and arrested 16 suspects.

Confirming the arrest of the suspects, Rear Admiral Augustine Suleman, Flag Officer, Commanding, Central Naval Command, said the arrest of the suspects was made possible by a tip-off.

He said navy personnel discovered a tap on the trans forcados pipeline, fixed six inches valve that enables crude oil thieves access to Nigerian crude unhindered.

Olamide, Don Jazzy start New Year with bitter feud at The Headies Award

 

Music industry heavyweights Olamide and Don Jazzy have started the New Year by turning on each other, leaving many in the music industry shocked.

Both artistes had collaborated on the song Skelemba, which is included in Olamide’s November 2014 album Street OT, giving the impression that the two were more of friends.

According to The Okhlahoman, the day after Christmas, 2-year-old Brianna Florer was laughing and jumping around with her older brother and two sisters opening presents at her grandparents' home. The next day the precocious blond-haired toddler was dead.
An X-ray of her tiny body showed the "killer" was a shiny, silver button battery.

“On Saturday she was fine,” maternal grandfather Kent Vice said. “It was a perfect Christmas.”

NNPC set to recruit Expatraites as part of ongoing restructuring exercise

 

The Minister of State for Petroleum and Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Ibe Kachikwu has said that expatriates would be recruited into the corporation as part of the ongoing restructuring of the state-run oil company for efficiency and profitability.

He disclosed that personnel restructuring of the corporation was only 25 per cent completed, stressing that “75 per cent of the restructuring is yet to be carried out.”

The minister noted that there was always an emotion about Nigerians being in charge of NNPC but insisted that the oil and gas industry was not where nationals just take charge alone, stressing that “it is an international business that requires international global best practice.”

Pregnant woman hit by stray bullet as cultists clash in Delta

Rampaging cultists in Obiaruku and Kwale Communities, Delta State, yesterday in the early hours allegedly killed a pregnant woman and three others between Ogume and Kwale community.

It was reliably gathered that the cultists are members of the Ake dreaded confraternity and Vinckies confraternity who allegedly suck blood during their initiations, as they engaged in rival war. Eyewitness, Ngozi Adekwe said that the cultists during the melee allegedly unleashed terror with cut-to-size guns including battle axes during which a pregnant woman was allegedly hit by spray bullets but Police Officers at the Obiaruku Police Division who did not want their names in print said nobody was killed, adding that it was the usual and recurring decimal of cult war in the area as six suspected members of the gang believed to be leaders of both cult groups were arrested and are currently helping the Police in further investigation.

Enstranged Governor Ikpeazu Presents N96.7bn 2016 Budget for Abia

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia who was sacked by a Court of Appeal in Owerri today has presented a N96.7billion budget for 2016 to the state House of Assembly for approval.

In his place, the court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to swear in Dr Alex Otti, candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA).

Not perturbed by the court ruling, Ikpeazu who addressed the House in Umuahia on Thursday during the budget presentation, said that the budget was 22.8 per cent less than the 2015 budget of N102.4 billion. Read more...

Senate says there is no plan to spend N4.5bn on Cars

The Senate on Thursday has described as untrue the claim that it planned to purchase cars that will be worth N50bn as claimed by President Muhammadu Buhari in his maiden media chat on Wednesday.

In a statement by its spokesperson, Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, the Senate said while the Senate is contemplating purchasing cars, it does not intend to spend anything close to the various figures of N4.5bn, N6bn or N50bn as being bandied around.

He added that shortly after getting the management team and the Senate services committee to commence the due process for the purchase, certain contractors who bid for the supply of the vehicles but felt their bid would not scale through began sponsoring media propaganda against the project and even leaked the recommendations of the body working on the proposed project.

Alex Otti Governor Elect of Abia State, Appeal Court Declares

 

An Appeal Court has declared the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, Mr Alex Otti, the winner of the Abia State Governorship election.

The court in its ruling ordered the swearing in of Mr Alex Otti, as governor of Abia State and asked Mr Okezie Ikpeazu to vacate the office.

Mr Ikpeazu of the Peoples Democratic Party was declared winner of the election held in April by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Happening Now: The Address Hotel Dubai currently gutted by fire

 

Fire engulfed a 63-storey skyscraper The Address Hotel in Dubai this evening. The building has been evacuated. Despite the blaze at the Address hotel, the display at the nearby Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, started as planned at midnight.

Officials say the fire has been brought under control and 16 people suffered mostly minor injures.
It is unclear what caused the blaze, which broke out as large crowds had gathered to ring in the new year. Read more...
