EXCLUSIVE: How Mandela Washington Fellow, John Paul Usman Drowned While Hiking

John Paul Ojaojogwu Usman

I reached out to one of the student of Mandela Washington who is part of the team from Nigeria. She's still in shock but managed to send in a witness report from one of the group that went hiking with late John Paul.

Incase you missed out, Nigeria and the US mission on Monday mourned the loss of Mandela Washington Fellow, John Paul Usman, who died on June 25 in an accident while hiking near Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

One of the hikers Nzuzi, a South African fellow who was with him that fateful day narrates the incident that led to John Paul's death, read his words:

FROM SA FELLOW AT VIRGINIA Hi guys. So we went on a hiking trip this afternoon, I was walking ahead with 4 other fellows including John Paul and one of our coordinators. We reached the water fall where some decided to swim. John Paul kept insisting I go into the water and I didn't because it was too cold. He then forced myself and another fellow to walk near the water fall and we stopped to take pictures. He decides to join the fellows who were right under the water fall and next thing he slips into water and starts drowning, another fellow tries to save him, they both disappeared for a while. We are all freaked out  and then  the one fellow comes back up but JP remains unseen. We start screaming for help, people jump in to look for him ,they then recover his body at perform CPR for about an hour but  unfortunately he did  not make it.
