President Obama praises Goodluck Jonathan for conceeding defeat

US President, Barack Obama and Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan

US President, Barack Obama has praised President Goodluck Jonathan for conceding defeat in Nigeria’s 2015 elections.

Jonathan lost to All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari in the elections which held on March 28 and 29.

“President Jonathan has placed his country’s interests first by conceding the election and congratulating president-elect (Muhammadu) Buhari on his victory,” Obama said in a White House statement released on Wednesday, April 1.
“I urge President-Elect Buhari and President Jonathan to repeat their calls to their supporters to continue to respect the election outcomes, focus on unifying the country, and together lead Nigeria through a peaceful transition,” the US President added.

Obama had earlier sent a pre-election message to Nigerians urging peaceful, free and fair polls as we reported.
