In Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state resdients were unable to get sound sleep throughout the night as sounds of heavy gunshots, explosions and shelling enveloped the town on Friday night.

A member of the youth vigilante group who spoke anonymously to our correspondent on phone on Saturday morning said some Boko Haram insurgents tried to invade the town  about 12:50am on Saturday from Ajilari Cross and Bintu Sugar axis of the town
.

He said the military were able to notice them in time and engaged them before they could further approach the town. He said the engagement lasted for about two hours between 12:50am and 2:50am.
According to him: "The insurgents were successfully repelled after the heavy shelling, gunshots and explosions, they fled back into the dark towards the direction they came from."

He could not however ascertain the number of casualties. A resident of Gomari, part of Maiduguri which is in the same neighborhood with Bintu Sugar, Abba Yunus who spoke to our correspondent on phone said five residents of the area were killed in the attempted invasion.

Yunus said a stray bullet killed a man who was sleeping outside in the open as a result of the harsh weather. He revealed that four people were killed in a house which was affected by the explosion in the area.
