A horror collision has left several people dead after two passenger
trains collided in Germany this morning. The horrific incident happened
near the town of Bad Aibling in Bavaria. It was gathered that one train
reportedly derailed as a result of the collision, which happened on a
single track.
Local police spokesman Jürgen Thalmeier said "several people have been killed in the crash".
More than 150 passengers have been injured. Around 100 rescue workers
are trying to cut passengers free from the wreckage, police say.
Police spokesman Stefan Sonntag added: "This is the biggest
accident we have had in years in this region and we have many emergency
doctors, ambulances and helicopters on the scene."
The cause of the crash is yet unknown but a signalling failure
hasn't been ruled out. The company operating the train service said the
crash was "a huge shock".
The spokesperson added it was "a tragic accident occurred on the single-track route".
Eight rescue helicopters and countless ambulances are racing casualties to hospital.
The accident occured shortly after 7am local time.
The devestating smash occurred near a sewage works on the route from Holzkirchen to Rosenheim, about 38 miles south of Munich.
Heiko Maas, the German justice minister, has tweeted his condolences.
He described the accident as "terrible news" and added: "Our thoughts are with the victims and injured. Thanks to rescuers."
