The Nigerian Military High Command has responded to the Amnesty
International(AI) report which accused Nigerian troops of committing
human rights offences while prosecuting the war against Boko Haram in
Borno State.
Nigeria Army’s Administration Chief, Major-General Adamu Baba
Abubakar, who gave the force’s position when he appeared before the
National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Abuja, declared that the
Nigerian Army has nothing to hide in respect of the reports, saying, as a
creation of the Constitution, it will always abide by the law and
respect the rights of Nigerians.
Abubakar said, “The Armed forces is a creation of the law and that is
why we have also worked within the ambit of the law, and we are willing
to corporate with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to show
we have nothing to hide.”
Responding the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights
Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, said: “We are glad that you had not decided
to go on the streets to defend allegations sent from hundreds of
thousands of kilometers away.”
According to Angwe, the commission will give the army opportunity to
tell Nigerians whether some of those allegations are true or not.
Angwe also noted the army’s acceptance to meet with them is a
demonstration of the fact that nobody is above the law, and that the
Nigerian military had at no point in time pretended to be above the law.
