A widow who has been in sorrow and tears was given a little hope after
village youths mounted a successful search operation for her abducted
babies by armed kidnappers.
It was a tearful situation on Wednesday, 13th January of 2016, as
the people of Umudara Umulogho community in Obowo Local Government Area
of Imo State were thrown into confusion following the abduction of two
babies of the triplets of a widow, Mrs. Christiana Iroh, by yet-to-be
identified gunmen. They took the 6-month-old babies from her house early
in the morning, as reported.
However, able-bodied youths of the community immediately mobilized
themselves in search of both the abductors and the babies. The babies
were discovered in a bush, abandoned as the desperate kidnappers
escaped. Both female, Chukwunemerem and Chidera were found alive and
healthy close to a popular hospital in the area.
Recounting her ordeal, the mother of the triplets, in tears,
narrated that at about 1:30am of Wednesday morning, her door was by
armed men, with one of them masked. She said as soon as they got in, two
of them grabbed two out of her triplets. When she struggled with them,
one them held her throat and pointed a gun at her face, threatening to
shoot her.
The terrified mother’s other children, awoken by the commotion,
began to bawl, causing the abductors to hit them, threatening them to
keep quiet. The 29-year-old widow said that one of the gunmen held her
while the others took the two babies away.
After the last one ran off, she screamed loudly, attracting
neighbours. The community formed a search party, combing all the bushes
around. Mrs. Iroh told Daily Trust that she does not suspect anyone from
the community, but stated that on the previous day, her brother-in-law
had threatened to deal with her over her refusal to vacate his late
brother’s house, which she said he has coveted for a while.
DailyTrust revealed that when she reported the matter to her
father-in-law Mr. Benedict Iroh, he showed support to the actions of his
son and asked her what she was still doing in the compound. She said he
even accused her of killing her husband.
When contacted, the traditional ruler of Umulogho autonomous
community, HRH Eze Ngozi Patrick said that his people are really
disturbed by the abduction of the babies by gunmen, adding that such an
incident has never happened in his community.
The Monarch revealed that he had already met with the Divisional
Police Officer when he visited the community on the matter, adding that
he made an official report to the Police Command, Owerri, insisting
there be no rest until the stolen babies are back, safe and sound, with
the perpetrators apprehended.
The Eze said the police have already arrested Mr. Ukah Iroh, the
elder brother to the late husband, who had earlier threatened to deal
with the widow, a day before the incident. Another community member, Nze
Paul Iweajunwa, used the opportunity to call on the state government
and the police to ensure they arrest the culprits.
Imo State Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Dave Adeyemi, insisted
that despite the recovery of the babies, the police will surely nab the
criminals responsible for the kidnapping.
